Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is involved in the adoption process? What is required?
The adoption process is simple: after carefully considering all factors and choosing your pet, you sign the adoption form agreeing to care for your new pet, and pay the adoption fees. We do not require potential adopters to complete an application, nor do we need documents showing that landlords allow pets. Our only requirement is that you have carefully thought about getting a new pet and that you will love and care for your pet to the best of your ability.
Q: What are the adoption fees?
Cats are $70 and kittens are $80, which includes a 4-in-1 vaccination, rabies shot, spay or neuter surgery, and general adoption fees.
All spayed or neutered dogs are $65. Unspayed females are $180, and unneutered males are $170. These fees include:
- spay/neuter surgery
- pain medication and Elizabethan collar for after surgery
- 5-in-1, bordatella and rabies vaccinations
- deworming
- city and county license
- microchip
- adoption fees
Q: The animal I want to adopt is not spayed or neutered. Can I take her home today and get her fixed at my veterinarian?
No. Sections 30503 and 31751 of the California State Food and Agricultural code require that all dogs and cats sold at a public animal shelter are to be spayed or neutered. Also, the fees charged for the surgeries are usually less than going directly through a vet!
Q: If the adoption doesn't work out, can I return the pet to SASF?
No. SASF cannot take in any animals, whether they were adopted from SASF or not. Any animal that cannot be kept should be taken to the City of Stockton Animal Shelter.
